01

Describe the towing task before searching

Record the intended trailer, load and ordinary journey conditions with the buyer. Ask for actual trailer information rather than relying on a casual description such as small caravan. Relevant limits apply to a defined combination, so use the vehicle's applicable instructions and appropriate destination guidance. Do not transfer a capacity from another powertrain, model year or market. The X3 specification record identifies the car to which a provider's assessment should apply. If the necessary vehicle or trailer information is missing, keep towing suitability unresolved instead of approving the purchase because another X3 has been seen doing a similar task.

02

Verify vehicle-specific limits with the provider

Obtain the applicable vehicle documentation and ask a competent provider to review the intended combination. Clarify which limits, load conditions and destination requirements their response covers. A headline trailer-weight figure does not answer every question about the complete loaded vehicle and trailer arrangement. Avoid writing a universal towing allowance for the whole X3 family. Where a public model reference is used, keep its date, market and configuration attached. The buyer needs a supported answer for the candidate and proposed use, with any restriction visible before agreeing a vehicle price or making a resale claim.

03

Identify the installed towing equipment

Ask whether the towbar, electrical equipment and related functions are original or added later, and obtain their available documentation. Have a qualified provider assess compatibility, condition and any required installation or setup. A neatly fitted visible bar does not demonstrate the complete electrical or vehicle arrangement. Check claimed functions using appropriate instructions and a responsible method. Do not improvise a towing demonstration with an unassessed trailer. Record the components actually included in the sale and distinguish them from accessories the customer would need to buy separately. Any proposed retrofit remains a separate project until it is supported and priced.

04

Review prior use and current condition

For a used candidate, ask about disclosed towing use and available records without inventing a history from the presence of a towbar. A car can have fitted equipment without a known use pattern; that uncertainty should remain explicit. The powertrain and driveline review belongs alongside the towing enquiry, with current findings and maintenance evidence assessed appropriately. Do not declare damage merely because the car towed, or conclude it is unaffected because the seller says towing was light. A qualified inspection should define its scope and limits, especially where symptoms or unusual observations need further investigation.

05

Price the ready-to-use arrangement

Include any necessary equipment, supported installation, assessment and agreed recheck in the comparison. Ask destination providers about the actual vehicle and trailer arrangement where local acceptance affects the purchase. Keep a preliminary estimate separate from a confirmed scope. The cheapest vehicle may not be the cheapest supported towing option once missing or unsuitable components are addressed. If the intended combination cannot be confirmed, compare another candidate or revise the brief rather than valuing a speculative future conversion as complete. The dealer's allowance should follow the actual ready-to-use requirements, with unresolved conditions left visible.

06

Make towing acceptance explicit

State the identified vehicle, intended trailer information, fitted components and the limits or requirements established by the responsible provider. Keep guidance and completion evidence in the handover file. For a new car, verify the delivered specification and any agreed installation; for a used car, retain condition and relevant history evidence as well. A substitute vehicle needs a new combination review, even when its model badge looks similar. Explain the assessed scope honestly to the customer. The result is a specific purchasing decision for a supported setup, not a guarantee that any X3 carrying a towbar can tow the same load everywhere.

Include the approved towing equipment and remaining requirements in the final VIN acceptance record before release.

Buyer questions

Can I buy by the biggest X3 towing figure I find?

No. Use the applicable vehicle documentation and review the intended loaded combination with a competent provider.

Does an installed towbar prove towing suitability?

No. Equipment, condition, vehicle limits and destination requirements need review together.
